Nairobi, February 13, The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) officials have been jailed for a month.
This ruling has been made earlier today February 13, 2017 by Judge Hellen Wasilwa. Judge Hellen passed the judgement under what was termed as contempt of court by the Kenya doctors officials.
KMPDU members have downed their tools for the past 71 days in a bid to negotiate better working terms and conditions. The Kenya doctors strike has led to a nation-wide health crisis.
The doctors through KMPDU have insisted on government honoring the 2013 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
KMPDU is mandated with the improvement of doctors welfare and the entire health sector of Kenya.
The Labour Court in Nairobi had previously suspended an earlier jail term verdict to give room for negotiations.
However, the KMPDU officials failed to call off the strike – a central requirement of the suspension of their jail term.
Negotiations led by COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli between KMPDU and the government hit a stalemate.
