Grief as Nyeri Governor Nderitu Gachagua passes away

Nairobi, February 24, The Nyeri County chief and renown politician James Nderitu Gachagua has passed away. According to his brother Rigathi Gachagua, Governor Nderitu Gachagua succumbed to pancreatic cancer on February 24, 2017 at 2:15 am.

The governor was undergoing treatment at The Royal Marsden Hospital in London, U.K. He is said to have flown out of the country on Wednesday, February 22, 2017.

Governor Nderitu Gachagua has been  unwell since 2015. He was often out of the country undergoing treatment  and his absence from the public limelight has drawn questions in the past  over his health.

Nderitu Gachagua was elected the Nyeri Governor in 2013 on the Grand National Unity (GNU) Party ticket . In September 2016, the governor survived an impeachment attempt by Nyeri Members of County Assembly (MCAs).

Previously, Governor Gachagua served as the Member of Parliament for Mathira constituency between 2002 and 2007 under National Rainbow Coalition ticket.

A holder of Bachelor of Arts degree in Building Economics from the University of Nairobi, the 64 year old Governor has practiced as a Quantity Surveyor since 1982.

James Gachagua was to seek re-election under a Jubilee Party ticket in the August 2017 election. In his absence, the Deputy Governor Samuel Wamathai has been at the county helm.
