The late Baringo Senator William Cheptumo will be laid to rest on Saturday, March 1, 2025, at his home in Bartabwa Ward, Baringo County.
According to the funeral planning committee, chaired by former Cabinet Secretary Simon Chelugui a funeral service will also be held on Thursday, February 27, 2025, at Milimani AIC Church in Nairobi from 10:00 a.m.
Cheptumo, a distinguished lawyer and politician, passed away on Sunday, February 16, 2025, at Nairobi Hospital after battling a long-term medical condition.
His passing has been met with an outpouring of condolences from national leaders, the church, county governments, and the people of Baringo County.
“Rising from a humble background, he became a national leader, serving for nearly two decades in both the National Assembly and the Senate. A consummate legal practitioner, he played a significant role in Kenya’s constitutional, political, and judicial reforms. He will also be remembered for his outstanding contribution to the legal defense during the historic ICC cases.” Said Chelugui.
He added: “Cheptumo served Kenya in various capacities—as an astute lawyer, a brilliant and strategic politician, a philanthropist, and a committed member of the AIC Church. He touched many lives, and his legacy is a testament to hard work, humility, and adherence to the highest standards of democratic principles, justice, and fairness.”
He was widely respected for his contributions to Kenya’s legal, political, and judicial reforms. His role in the historic International Criminal Court (ICC) defense cases remains a notable part of his legacy. He was also known for his philanthropy and deep commitment to the AIC Church.
In a statement, the planning committee, in full agreement with his family and local leaders, expressed gratitude to President William Ruto, Parliament, the church, and all those who have extended their support during this difficult time.
Planning meetings for the funeral will take place on February 18, 19, and 20, as well as on February 25, at 4:30 p.m.
Additional meetings will be held simultaneously in Kabarnet and at his Tunoiwo home.
