Kenyan middle-distance runner Faith Kipyegon has been nominated for the coveted Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year Award for 2024. This nomination comes after a phenomenal year for Kipyegon, solidifying her place as one of the greatest middle-distance runners of all time.
Kipyegon’s 2023 season was a masterclass in dominance. She etched her name in history by becoming the first woman ever to win both the 1500m and 5000m at the World Championships in Budapest. This added to her two previous World Championship titles in the 1500m, further cementing her legacy in the event.
But Kipyegon’s achievements weren’t limited to just winning. She also shattered three world records in a span of just two months, showcasing her incredible athletic prowess. These records included the 1500m, the mile, and the 5000m, although the 5000m record was later broken by Ethiopian runner Gudaf Tsegay.
Kipyegon will face stiff competition for the Laureus award, facing off against other accomplished athletes like Jamaican sprinters Shericka Jackson and Sha’Carri Richardson, Spanish footballer Aitana Bonmati, American skier Mikaela Shiffrin, and Polish tennis star Iga Swiatek.
The ceremony for the 2024 Laureus World Sports Awards will be held on April 22nd in Madrid, Spain. Whether she wins the award or not, Kipyegon’s nomination is a testament to her exceptional talent and dedication, further solidifying her position as a Kenyan sporting icon.
