A 24-year-old man, Tyson Kayesi, has been sentenced to seven years in prison for assaulting a police officer on duty in Kakamega.
The incident occurred in May 2024. Kayesi initially refused to plead guilty on two separate occasions but eventually changed his plea to guilty on all four charges against him.
During the trial, prosecutor Ms. Moraa Atandi urged the court to impose the minimum sentence prescribed by law.
Delivering the judgment, Principal Magistrate Hon. J. J. Masiga noted the increasing prevalence of assaults on police officers nationwide. He emphasized that a custodial sentence was necessary to deter both the community and potential offenders from committing such crimes.
