PRESIDENT William Ruto has appointed journalist Michael Gitonga as Secretary State Functions.
The former KTN host has been working as the Communication Director in the office of the First Lady.
Gitonga will take up the role as the ‘Presidential MC’ whose work is to run state or presidential functions in a role that technically runs the speeches protocol.
He said in his acceptance message: “With a new year comes new beginnings I am first of all grateful to God. I also take this opportunity to thank the President of Kenya William Ruto for the opportunity to serve this nation as Secretary State Functions. I am indebted to The First Lady Mama Rachel Ruto”.
Gitonga takes up the role from Peter Wanjohi who was Uhuru Kenyatta’s Secretary State Functions.
Although Wanjohi has been in office, Gitonga has been in control as MC of a number of state functions.
Media personalities have been critical of Wanjohi for failing to fit into his predecessor Sammy Lui’s shoes.
A journalist who sought anonymity said: “Wanjohi has made so many blunders he should just retire peacefully.
Wanjohi also found himself on the receiving end when he controversially failed to recognise the arrival of William Ruto, then deputy president during Uhuru Kenyatta’s final public holiday as Head of State.
Sammy Lui, formerly of KTN, was known for his perfected diction of both Swahili and English languages unlike Wanjohi who carried an accent.
Sammy Lui served during the full two terms of Kenya’s third President, Mwai Kibaki.
